Emerald Village will provide a grassroots model for long-term, affordable housing that is more accessible, sustainable, and independent of government subsidy.
We plan to build on our success rather than duplicate it. While Opportunity Village focuses on transitional housing, Emerald Village will provide more accessible and sustainable places to transition to.
The housing will be roughly twice as big at 120-150 sq. ft. with a kitchenette, heat, and electrical hook-ups. Similar to Opportunity Village, the micro-housing will be supported by common gathering, kitchen, and restroom facilities.
Residents will tentatively make monthly payments of around $150 to $200 toward the value of their tiny house—building an asset for the future. If a resident decides to leave the village, they will then be able to sell the equity accrued back to the non-profit.
With conventional development, low-income housing costs upwards of $200,000 PER unit. Emerald Village will provide a grassroots alternative at a very small fraction of the cost.
We are at the beginning of a fundraising campaign toward the physical development of the village. Help us build this citizen-driven approach to affordable housing in the absence of sufficient government funding to adequately address the issue. An anonymous donor has already agreed to match the first $25,000 donated to the project—meaning your donation will go twice as far.
